The Problem

There is no current app that allows baseball players/family members to track baseball scores for free.

Creating a better experience for baseball players and scorekeepers to keep track of their individual and team games. Our competitor analysis revealed several existing baseball scorekeeping apps. However, these apps fell short in several key areas:

  • Limited Functionality: They lacked some of the features we envision for BallPlayer, hindering a comprehensive user experience.

  • Outdated Design: The interfaces felt dated and visually unappealing, reducing user engagement.

  • Usability Issues: The apps weren't user-friendly. Unintuitive design and crashes during gameplay would discourage users from adopting them long-term

Existing scorekeeping apps often come with a price tag and limit your ability to keep your game history forever.

Research

Quantitative Interviews: We interviewed people in the baseball industry between 16-40 years old, we wanted to dive deeper into what are the features they would like to see in a platform like this and how they currently track scores in games.

"As a parent is really hard to keep up with my 3 kids who play baseball, I usually have some copies and pictures from the coach with their scores. I believe is very important to see the scores so we can see in what areas our kids could improve."

Robert Gomez

Coach

"We usually have some people who are in charge of the scorekeeping per team, they tend to use spreadsheets. It would be nice to have a digital app that does not break the bank and is easy to use for the not so tech savvy scorekeepers."

Jake Adams

Baseball Player

"Usually our team scorekeepers are the ones that keep track of the plays. I see myself playing baseball for a long time, so having a history that displays my scores from start of my career to later on, would be great when trying to apply for a scholarship."

Surveys

01

"Tracking scores is something that helps players to stay motivated, they get to see the areas they need to improve."

02

"It would be great if we can share our scores with other players."

03

"Communication between teams is important, it would be nice to be able to message the team."

04

"We need an accessible and easy to understand app."

05

"I can see coaches and family members following people to stay up-to-date on their stats."

06

"If we can see a field map and the players on it, similar to GameChanger."

Mobile Wireframes

During the early design process, I was able to create wireframes for the entire flows of this app. This stage also helped me to think about what we discussed with the clients during the discovery process.

  • I created mid-to-high fidelity wireframes for this project. (these type of wireframes help our clients to have a better picture of where some of the components will be placed by the time we work on the interface).

  • Figma was the software used.

  • I created a prototype that would help us to start testing the main flows.

  • We gave the prototype to a couple of users to gather some data.

Testing Results

100%

94%

90%

Iterations

Following our testing phase, I revisited certain wireframes and implemented revisions.
Additionally, our content designer assisted in refining some copy, alleviating confusion experienced by our users.

Mobile Designs

While conducting more research on features, we encountered a patent held by GameChanger pertaining to real-time scorekeeping.

“The remote database may allow third party users to access the game data as it is uploaded to the database in order to follow the progress of the game in real time.”

Following extensive meetings involving stakeholders, design team, and the development team, we devised the following approach:

  1. During a game, when the scorekeeper records a play, the data will be saved but not immediately transmitted to the feed.

  2. Once the subsequent play is finalized, we will then send the preceding play to the feed and notify users accordingly.

This strategy allows us to avoid infringing on the patent while still maintaining the value of our features.

Mobile Designs

Our clients sought a user friendly that was both inviting and modern.

  • We aimed for an interface accessible to users of all ages.

  • The primary tones in the chosen color palettes were predominantly blue, ensuring a friendly interface suitable for users of all age groups.

  • To define the app's illustration style, we provided a mood board.

Next Steps

As of now, BallPlayer users can track scorekeeping for baseball and softball games. We are planning to add more sports in the future and upcoming versions of this app.
